Geneva Troop 5

Fall 2003 Camporee - October 24-25, 2003

We attended the Fox Valley District Fall 2003 Camporee at the TRC Ranch in Rochelle, Illinois. We drove west towards the ranch with lightning in the skies. It rained off and on most of the evening, but Saturday was pleasant.
Rob Stevens
John Barney
Dale felt prompted to bring this tent for shelter from the rain. Thankfully, he listened.
Matt Amato
Cheyne's Beanee Weenies.
Yummy. Cheyne and Matt.
This goulash chased away the chill.
John Barney and Robbie Blotter cook dinner.
Zak's unusual backpack becomes an unusual headboard.
Waiting for breakfast.
Waiting for breakfast.
Waiting for breakfast.
Not waiting for breakfast...Zak has pudding for breakfast.
Pumpkin chunkin' catapaults.
John Barney lashes our catapault.
Dale Blotter oversees construction of our catapault. We were the only troop to assemble a catapault on-the-spot with lashings.
Rob Stevens. Hmmm...I hope Dale and Bill know what they're doing!
Interesting catapault, primitive (?) design. Two large boxes of rock and sand provide the weight to throw the pumpkin. Note the "safety" board under the boxes, which is removed before "firing".
This catapault was made using garage door springs (I think.)
Pretty cool design. Using a large salad bowl as the launch basket and surgical tubing for the force. Those on the "firing line" wore hard hats and goggles!
Ours is almost done...if we could just get the pumpkin to stay in the basket throughout the launch.
Kirk and Cheyne.
Picture perfect! (Actually, this one went straight up and straight down!)
A more successful effort!
12 minute mile. The objective is to complete a mile NOT as fast as you can, but AS CLOSE TO 12 minutes as possible. Use the scout pace: run 50 paces, walk 50 paces. Our boys finished in 11:15.
Back: Rob Stevens, Dale Blotter, Bill Qualls. Front: Kirk Gray, Zak Tritsch, Cheyne Heaton, Matt Amato, Robbie Blotter, John Barney.
Flag ceremony.
What? No McDonalds?
Saturday lunch.
Me. Bill Qualls.
I was responsible for the semaphore event. K Mallory made this wheel for me. Each phrase has 10 different letters. Two scouts in each patrol had to spin the wheel and send the phrase to me.
I was very impressed with how quickly Matt Amato learned semaphore!
Judging semaphore.
Rob imagines he's training dolphins at Brookfield Zoo...Kirk and John catching Cheerios.
