Geneva Troop 5

Camp Big Timber, November 19-20, 2004

This month's campout was to Camp Big Timber in Elgin, Illinois. We camped in the "tepees" just as we did in November of last year. There was a light drizzle as we left the church on Friday night and the forecast was not promising, but we had pleasant weather and temperatures.
Brayden, Scott and Rob at the fire. We had a great cooking fire with lots of wonderful split oak firewood!
Scott, Brayden and Derek.
Scott feeds the fire.
Cameron is confused by his sleeping pad.
OK, no more sugar for you!
Bill.
The beginnings of a delicious one pot meal. I'm not sure if it was a stew or not, and I know it could never be duplicated (who puts ramen noodles in stew?) but it was warm and delicious.
Lots of love.
Who appears to be doing most of the work?
Cameron and Jason.
Chris and Jason. More love.
Scoutmaster Don.
I have too many pictures of Chris eating.
Soon to be a dutch oven treat.
Rob.
Jason and Brayden.
It was painful watching Chris attempt to open a can of cherries with my swiss army knife. Remember the IKEA lamp commercial? That lamp would have wept for this can!
Oil the sides of the dutch oven.
Wise scoutmaster.
Very capable assistant scoutmaster with a dutch oven delight.
Jason hits the sack early.
Chris likes to split wood.
Derek, Jason and Brayden watch the morning fire, which contains my metal cup for my requisite cup(s) of hot chocolate.
Apparently Cameron never did figure out what to do with that sleeping pad.
Jason fries up the bacon.
Scott finds it necessary to instruct Chris on the finer points of how to use a spoon so the pancake batter isn't so lumpy.
Not a morning person.
Derek.
Jason and Brayden.
Chris and Derek.
Jason.
Still not awake.
Scott fries up some donuts.
The donuts cook quickly. Remove from dutch oven and roll in powdered sugar. A slightly messy but oh-so-yummy delight.
Just like last year, the tepees provided a diversion. Trying to throw something - anything - even a bottle of Gatorade - through the hole in the top.
On one successful throw the Gatorage bottle stayed up on the top. Will it be there next time we're here?
LEarning the order of the compass points.
Compass points.
Derek sees the points of the compass while Chris thinks he sees a full house.
A short hike around the camp.
Take 5 boys, add water and rocks. Serve up some fun.
The biggest splash...a timeless tradition.
Here we go...!
Leaders look on, each one thinking to himself "that kid's not riding home in my car with those shoes!"
Gotcha!
Troop 5. Good people.
